Pension savers want McDonald’s to demonstrate whether its climate strategy can reasonably achieve its 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction goals, according to new research from leading online pension provider PensionBee.

The shareholder proposed resolution, which will be voted on at McDonald’s AGM tomorrow (20 May), urges the fast-food giant to disclose an assessment of whether its climate transition plans and related resource commitments can reasonably achieve its 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets – or whether additional plans or commitments are necessary.

According to PensionBee’s survey, 62% of respondents said they would support this resolution if given the opportunity to vote. Just 11% said they would vote against it, while 26% were undecided.

McDonald’s is one of the largest purchasers of beef globally, and with livestock production a significant contributor to emissions, investors are increasingly questioning whether its climate strategy aligns with international targets and best practices, especially absent a disclosed roadmap. With growing scrutiny on corporate climate action, shareholders are demanding greater transparency and accountability.

Clare Reilly, Chief Engagement Officer at PensionBee, commented: “Our research shows that pension savers want companies to be honest about whether they’re on track to meet their climate goals. The strong support for this resolution reflects a clear expectation that businesses like McDonald’s must demonstrate credible and achievable climate plans – not just headline targets.

“Pension savers are looking for reassurance that their money is being invested in companies that take their environmental responsibilities seriously. We hope shareholders take this opportunity to act and companies to listen.”
