‘Making retirement simpler must not mean taking away personal choice’, PensionBee comments on Guided Retirement proposals

London, 3 November 2026: In response to the Government’s announcement of further consultations in relation to Guided Retirement and proposals to introduce default retirement options for around 17 million private sector workers.
Becky O’Connor, Head of Pensions at PensionBee, said: “Millions of people are doing the right thing by saving into a pension throughout their working lives, but reaching retirement is only half the challenge. People also need to know how to access and utilise their private savings to provide a sustainable income that can support them for the rest of their lives, alongside accessing the State Pension.
“Whilst recognising that retirement savings belong to the individual and respecting the freedom and choice people should have, the responsibility for making complex and potentially life-changing retirement decisions can feel like a burden for some. Default retirement options for workplace providers could help to bridge this gap, providing people greater confidence that their pension savings may translate into a sustainable income, rather than leaving them to navigate the options alone.
“However, making retirement simpler must not mean taking away personal choice. Everyone's circumstances are different, and people need the flexibility to decide how best to use their pension savings, whether that means securing a regular income, retaining flexibility to access their money - including tax free cash - or a combination of approaches. Transparency around charges, investment risks and the income people can expect will also be essential.
"Ultimately, helping people make their pension savings last is only one part of the equation. The most critical input however is ensuring people are building sufficiently large pension pots in the first place. Improving pension adequacy and providing better support at retirement must go hand in hand if we are to give future generations greater financial security in later life.
“Stable UK pension policy with goalposts that do not keep shifting is essential to provide the right conditions for people to save and spend in retirement with confidence.”
